To give you an example for the next generation, this is a snapshot of a fan chart for Kathleen (Mattimore) Hirsch. The fan view for family trees shows a root person in the center circle (in this case, Kathleen Mattimore) and her ancestors fanning out from there. Her paternal side is on the left and her maternal side on the right. This chart would be the same for Kathleen’s siblings — Mary, Harry, Jane, Jack and Sally.
